Beamline Technician Position at ChemMatCARS

Beamline Technician Position at Chemistry and Material Sciences Center for Advanced Radiation Sources (ChemMatCARS), University of Chicago

ChemMatCARS, affiliated with the Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering (PME), the University of Chicago and funded by NSF, is a national user facility for frontier research in chemistry and materials science using synchrotron x-rays. It is located at the Advanced Photon Source, Argonne National Laboratory. The mission of ChemMatCARS is to develop and operate world-class synchrotron x-ray facilities in the areas of small-molecule crystallography, liquid interface scattering, and anomalous small angle scattering to serve the needs of ChemMatCARS users. Under the supervision of the Faculty Director, the Beamline Technician will assist in technical support activities related to scientific research projects, beamline development, and user operations at ChemMatCARS. Activities include, but are not limited to, operating and maintaining UHV and HV vacuum equipment, troubleshooting electronic instruments, managing electrical cables, machining parts, and assembling equipment to facilitate users’ experiments.

Energy Research Associate at Brookhaven National Laboratory

On behalf of Energy Frontier Research Center on Molten Salts in Extreme Environments (MSEE) at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL), we would like to bring your attention to postdoctoral Research Associate position within the Energy Frontier Research Center (EFRC) on Molten Salts in Extreme Environments.

The position requires a Ph.D. degree in chemistry, physics, materials science or a related field. The interdisciplinary research will focus on structural and spectroscopic investigation of molten salts, solutes in them, and liquid-solid interfaces. The postdoc will investigate molten salt systems using NSLS-II beamline facilities at Brookhaven National Laboratory, with X-ray absorption fine structure along with x-ray scattering techniques. This position will be in Nuclear Science and Technology Department at Brookhaven National Lab, Under supervision of Dr. Simerjeet Gill. Responsibilities will include performing synchrotron experiments on molten salt systems with and without actinides and collaborating with other participants of MSEE-EFRC. Staff Scientist (NE-CAT)

The Northeastern Collaborative Access Team (NE-CAT), located at the Advanced Photon Source at the Argonne National Laboratory in suburban Chicago, is seeking applicants for a Staff Scientist position at the Research Associate and Sr. Research Associate levels. Primary responsibilities will be to provide training and support to users of NE-CAT’s two state-of-the-art X-ray beamlines, provide crystallographic expertise to ensure the highest quality data and structures, and contribute to the continued development of beamline software tools. The prospective applicant will collaborate with other NE-CAT team members to enhance and extend the capabilities of the NE-CAT beamlines – ideally contributing to the continued development of software tools that improve the user experience at NE-CAT and will be expected to take initiative and contribute to the team effort in an inclusive and respectful environment. To be considered for the Senior Research Associate level, a candidate should have significant experience managing synchrotron beamlines as well as advanced experimental and programming capabilities.

Synchrotron X-ray Beamline Scientist in Liquid Interface X-Ray Scattering at ChemMatCARS

The University of Illinois at Chicago is seeking a Beamline Scientist in liquid interface x-ray scattering to join NSF’s ChemMatCARS, a national synchrotron x-ray user research facility at Sector 15 of the Advanced Photon Source (APS) at Argonne National Laboratory (ANL). The appointment will be made as a Visiting Research Assistant Professor during its initial phase with long term renewal as a ChemMatCARS employee subject to funding availability and performance.

Postdoctoral Researcher

Two postdoctoral researcher positions are available in the X-ray interface science group of Professor Michael Bedzyk at Northwestern University. The successful applicant will be a collaborator in the Institute for Catalysis in Energy Processes or the Center for Superconducting Quantum Materials and Systems. X-ray sources include several in-house rotating anodes, and beamlines at the Advanced Photon Source and Diamond Light Source.

REQUIREMENTS: A Ph.D. in physics. Candidates' background should be in experimental condensed matter physics. Applications will be evaluated on a rolling basis until the position is filled.

Senior Software Developer (LS-CAT)

An experienced programmer with x-ray scientific background is required to support operations at the Life Sciences Collaborative Access Team (LS-CAT). LS-CAT is a highly productive molecular crystallography beamline requiring someone to help support the current infrastructure. In addition, this is a very exciting time with the APS undergoing a major upgrade in April 2023 and LS-CAT needs to implement new equipment and controls to take advantage of the vastly improved x-ray source.

Participates as technical expert in design, development, coding, testing, and/or debugging of major new software and/or significant enhancements to existing software which may include applications over multiple platforms.  Guides and advises junior staff.  Manages complex projects independently and assists in estimating and planning for future development work. Performs complex system integration tasks.
