Applicability |
All beamline experiments conducted at the APS qualify for at the minimum Experiment Hazard Class 1 designation. The designation addresses hazards inherent to the facility (hazards to which every experimenter working at the APS may be exposed). This hazard class includes the incidental use of small quantities of common cleaning solvents solvents (e.g., acetone, methanol, ethanol, etc.). The associated hazard control set is required for every experimenter performing hands-on work at the APS. |

Experiment Hazard Control Verification Statements |
The hazard controls listed below must be incorporated into the experiment safety plan for each experiment conducted at the APS. Engineered Controls – None beyond those already incorporated at the APS. Procedural Controls – Although there are no formal procedural controls required, procedures covering securing experiment enclosures and routine use of cryogens at the APS are covered in sector orientation. Incidental use of common cleaning solvents must be implemented according to requirements in the Argonne LMS Procedures. Follow the controls found in the SDS, direct sprays away from the eyes, skin, and body parts. Wear proper PPE (safety glasses with sideshields) and gloves if stated in the SDS for use of common cleaning solvents. Eating or drinking is not allowed in areas where chemicals are being used. The solvents must be kept in proper, labeled containers and away from ignition sources. In case of an emergency or spill, dial 911 from an Argonne phone or 630-252-1911 from a cell phone. Training –All core courses can be taken via the Remote Training web site.
Signs and Labeling – None beyond those already in place at the APS. Personal Protective Equipment – Safety glasses and appropriate protective gloves for the incidental use of common cleaning solvents (see the solvent SDS) when solvents are in use. |
Experiment Authorization |
Unless otherwise noted in the approved experiment safety plan, the PSC Deputy Associate Laboratory Director of Operations delegates the authority to authorize an experiment in this hazard class to a member of the APS Experiment Safety Review Board and resident beamline personnel having the authority to authorize experiments as listed in the ESAF system. Approval by both the host beamline and APS Experiment Safety Review Board are mandatory prerequisites for experiment authorization. |
Hazard Control Verification |
The PSC Deputy Associate Laboratory Director of Operations delegates responsibility for verifying that each experimenter is current on the six required training courses to the experiment On-Site Spokesperson. To verify that training is in place, the experiment Spokesperson and Beamline Management must find that the training has either been recorded in the Argonne National Laboratory Training Management System or other reliable evidence of training is available, e.g., training certificates or, in the case of GERT, a GERT or higher level radiation worker card. Reports showing training recorded in the Argonne National Laboratory Training Management System can be requested from the APS User Administration and Support Office. The PSC Deputy Associate Laboratory Director of Operations also delegates responsibility for verifying that required controls are in place to the experiment On-Site Spokesperson and Beamline Management. |
